The Importance of a Consultant

Why Do Companies Hire Consultants?

Consultants are hired to provide advice and guidance to companies seeking to improve their performance, solve specific problems, or achieve certain objectives.

We...

1. Analyze a company's operations, processes, and strategies, identifying areas for improvement or optimization.

2. Offer tailored recommendations, develop action plans, and sometimes implement changes directly.

3. May specialize in various areas such as management, finance, marketing, or operations.

4. Work closely with clients to understand their unique challenges and goals, providing insights, solutions, and support to drive organizational success and growth.

There’s a video I watched years ago where Steve Jobs (creator of Apple) is speaking directly to consultants.

“I don’t think there’s anything inherently evil with consulting, I think that without having ownership of the thing you’re speaking to, you’re coming in making recommendations and not owning the results” -Steve Jobs (Apple CEO)

To this, I can definitely agree. And this is why I do what I do.

At the end of the day what you’ve created is yours. Even if someone else guides and supports you along the way, the results are yours and yours alone. However, I don’t believe anyone is an island and this is where I part ways with Mr. Jobs.

I’m a strong believer in the third party, unbiased perspective. Sometimes we hold the things we love too closely. Especially when things are difficult and you feel as if you’re going to lose the things you’ve spent so much time creating. We begin to strangle and suffocate the things we love out of fear of losing it.

My job is to relieve that fear and problem solve solutions alongside you, to find where things got "off track" and navigate back to your original vision.

A colleague during my marketing time in Thailand once told me, “we’re the people that point out the holes in the ship. Without us, the ship will sink. The problem is, people don’t like negative results. So we’re challenged with bringing negative results along with positive solutions.”

This is why consultants are important.

We get too close to what we’ve created and we fear potential failure.

My advice to this is:

there’s no such thing as failure.

Seth Godin (author, entrepreneur and business coach) has a book called The Dip. In it he talks about the importance of when to and when not to quit.

“You either quit before you start, or after you’ve done the work and it didn’t yield the results you were looking for. But never quit in the dip. When times are hard, search for support and guidance”

My hope in writing this article is to express the importance of having someone on your side, championing you and going to bat when things get tough. If this sounds like you, or someone you know, throw me a line and let’s figure out what’s slowing down the process of moving toward the original vision.

"Joel helps define & connect systems or action plans so your business works the way you want it to & you can focus on Growth instead of admin/maintenance/details. He’s highly collaborative -& always entertaining - with great respect for your vision.

Stop wasting your energy, start getting things accomplished!
